Recommended OBS Settings for macOS

Device – Mac Mini M4 or Mac Studio M1

Use the following settings on OBS to get the best of the device and enable the best quality stream for the internet speed we have,

  • Encoder: Apple VT H.264 Hardware Encoder (if available), else x264
  • Rate Control: CBR (Constant Bitrate)
  • Bitrate: 4500-6000 Kbps for 1080p @ 30fps (up to 8000 Kbps for 60fps)
  • Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds
  • B-Frames: Enabled (if available)
  • Audio Encoder: CoreAudio AAC
  • Audio Bitrate: 160 Kbps (or 192 Kbps for higher quality)
  • Downscale Filter: Lanczos (best quality, 36 samples)
  • Base (Canvas) Resolution: 1920×1080
  • Output (Scaled) Resolution: 1920×1080 (or 1280×720 if struggling)
  • Common FPS Values: 30 or 60 FPS depending on hardware & stream goals
  • Color Format: NV12
  • Color Space: 709 (for HD content)
  • Color Range: Limited (safer for streaming platforms)
  • SDR White Level: 300 (default, recommended unless HDR is used)
  • HDR Nominal Peak Level: 1000 (if using HDR, otherwise not relevant)
  • Stream Delay: 0 (unless you want to buffer for moderation/security)
  • Dynamic Bitrate: Enabled (Advanced > Network > Enable Dynamic Bitrate)
